On Wednesday, an officer was shot and injured, responding to a domestic disturbance at a residence in north Sacramento. The officer was revealed to be Officer Tara O’Sullivan, 26. She was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in serious condition and died later in the night.

Deputy Police Chief Dave Poletta made the announcement early Thursday morning.

The incident began around noon after officers received reports of a disturbance between a man and a woman.

Police responded to a home near Edgewater Road and Redwood Avenue around 3:30 PM. As officers helped the woman gather belongings, the man entered the home around 6:10 PM and started shooting at the officers and woman with a rifle, police said.

Officer Tara O’Sullivan was shot and went down in the backyard.

According to police, other officers were forced to take cover from the gunfire and struggled to get to the injured officer.

Around 6:50 PM, an armored vehicle arrived to rescue Officer Tara O’Sullivan.

The woman involved in the disturbance was able to get out safely, police said, while the man barricaded himself in the home, firing several rounds.

Officers returned fire, but the status of the suspect remained unknown at that time.

Nearby residents were evacuated, and an evacuation center was set up for displaced residents at Noralto Elementary School at 477 Las Palmas.

Officers remained at the scene, and people were advised to avoid the area.

As of 5:44 AM, the suspect surrendered himself and was taken into custody, according to the Sacramento Police Department. The suspect, 45 year old Adel Sambrano Ramos, is being charged with the murder of Officer Tara O’Sullivan.

Rest In Peace, Officer Tara O’Sullivan. The Elk Grove Tribune extends our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
