As a bonus, making a donation will automatically get your name entered in a drawing.

Disparity In Maternal Morbidity

According to its website, Haven’s mission is to support every woman and family in a way that is inclusive and equitable. This non-profit organization battles the disparity in maternal morbidity for BIPOC women. Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous women suffer injury and death during pregnancy more often than their white counterparts with Black women leading in pregnancy-related deaths.

“Black mothers/birthing people are still three to four times as likely to die (PDF) from pregnancy/birth-related causes and twice as likely to suffer maternal morbidity (such as hemorrhage and infection) than those in all other racial/ethnic groups,” according to the California Healthcare Foundation.

Haven was created to counter these pregnancy injustices.

Sliding Fee Scale Model

All services provided by Haven are done so on a sliding fee scale. Haven has six doulas that are perfectly paired with mothers in order to fit each mother’s own unique needs. The doulas will be there every step of the way along the pregnancy journey. Additional services provided include lactation consultations, chiropractic care, fitness, and nutrition classes.

Dreams Do Come True

Th COVID-19 pandemic has slowed everybody down. But that is not the case for the Haven founders. Despite the pandemic, they decided to follow their dreams.

“Haven has been a dream of ours for many years. As stressful and unknown as this pandemic has been, it has given us the opportunity to explore this new adventure. Ever since we decided we wanted to try to make this a reality, every step we’ve been met with more and more support which has fueled our confidence that this is truly a needed resource in Sacramento!” said co-founder, Liz Kennish.

The community appreciates Haven’s passion and drive for birth justice.
