Could Elk Grove Soon Be Home To The Sacramento Zoo?
The Sacramento Zoo is looking for a new location. Over the last four years, they have checked all amenities throughout Sacramento County with little to no luck. That is until today! The Sacramento Zoological Society has partnered with the City of Elk Grove to negotiate a new location. Six months of evaluation and negotiation are expected between the Sacramento Zoological Society and the City of Elk Grove.
Opening its doors in June of 1927, the Sacramento Zoo currently sits on 14.7 acres of land, which is hardly enough space for its 500+ animals, exhibits, and guest parking. Anybody who has visited the Sacramento Zoo at the current location knows that parking is hard to find. There is also not enough space for all their animals. They have become desperate for a new place to call home, and Elk Grove may just have the land they are looking for!
Located after the intersection of Kammerer Road and Lotz Parkway sits 60 acres of unused land, perfect for a zoo. Within the past few days, the city has secured an opportunity to buy the property from developer Kamilos Companies. If the Zoological Society finds that this land would be ideal for the animals and their staff, Elk Grove will host this beloved attraction. Not only would this partnership benefit the Sacramento Zoo, but it would also bring new tourism and opportunities to Elk Grove! While there is still no guarantee, this potential partnership brings us all one step closer to finding our beloved zoo a new home!
