Black Youth Leadership Project Plans Celebration Weekend For The Class Of 2021

The Elk Grove-based education advocacy and support organization known as Black Youth Leadership Project (BYLP) plans a weekend of celebration for the Class of 2021!

BYLP, a non-profit dedicated to developing the next generation of Black public leaders in California, says it’s excited to celebrate the accomplishments of local youth, including Elk Grove and Sacramento, at Celebration Weekend. Celebration Weekend aims to give area students a sense of normalcy. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Black students and families hard.

Black youth in California have the highest rate of disproportionate discipline, a situation made worse by COVID-19. BYLP is a voice for these students.

Day One: “An Enchanted Evening” Prom

Friday, June 18th is the first day of Celebration Weekend. On day one, High School Seniors in the area are invited to take their last dance as a High School student at the Celebration Weekend Senior Prom. The event’s theme, “An Enchanted Evening”, is sure to bring a new twist to an old classic! Last year, because of COVID-19, many Elk Grove and Sacramento students missed Proms and graduations. Celebration Weekends Senior Prom features DJ Tosh. Tickets are $60. This includes the entry fee, a BYLP swag bag, a professional photo, soft drinks, and a dessert table. Raffle prizes are available via cash or Cashsapp during the event.

The evening starts at 7 pm. The dance floor will be in a grass setting. So comfortable shoes are strongly encouraged. Although COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted in time for the event, care will be taken to ensure the safety of the students, family, and staff.

Day Two: “Keep Moving Forward”

BYLP’s Celebration Weekend would not be complete without its annual Black Graduation night. This year, the theme is “Keep Moving Forward”. This is day two of BYLP’s Celebration weekend. Celebration Weekends Black Graduation event celebrates students for their hard work and perseverance. The event also showcases students’ accomplishments against tough odds. Now, especially now, is the time for the Elk Grove and Sacramento community to intentionally show love and support to our seniors.

This formal event will be held Saturday, June 19th from 4 pm-6 pm. Tickets are $25 and include your seat, a BYLP swag bag, a certificate, light refreshments, and two guest tickets. Additional tickets are available at a cost of $5 each.

Corporate Donors

Thankfully, individual and corporate donors help make BYLP’s work possible. If you would like to show support for Celebration Weekend with in-kind donations of baked goods or paper products, email Salina Valencia at svalencia@bylp.org.
