Supreme Court Overturns Landmark Case Roe v. Wade

The United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Texas-originated law that protects a woman’s right to have an abortion, in a 6-3 vote in Washington D.C. Friday morning.

The previous law is now considered unconstitutional, and leaves accessibility to abortion services to each state.

Newsom Signs New Bill Against Abortion Bans

California Governor, Gavin Newsom was the first to sign AB 1666, a bill that aims to protect abortion rights in the State of California.

In a recent press conference, Newsom addressed his plans to take action against legislation. Further, the new bill prevents civil action, and protects both patients and caregivers from abortion bans.

Additionally, Newsom has been active on social media. He recently tweeted one of several opinions he had on the overturning.

A Call to Action

Interestingly, other government officials voiced their opinions on social media including former First Lady, Michelle Obama. She recently posted a call to action on Instagram, even for those not directly affected.

Additionally, protesters gathered at the State Capitol to amplify their voices. Francis Doherly, a Roseville Planned Parenthood representative said that the ban poses a threat on women’s safety.

“The possibility of a safe abortion is threatened. Unfortunately, there will still be a need for abortions, just in unsafe ways.”

President and Chief Executive Officer of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of America, Jody Hicks believes this takes away civil liberties for women calling the world we live in today, “a post-Roe reality.”

” We are in a post-Roe reality, and I don’t know that we can properly wrap our minds around what that means today.”

-Jody Hicks, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California

“It means folks don’t have equal rights,” Hicks said. “They don’t have autonomy over their body anymore; it means they don’t have agency over decisions that affect their futures.”

Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that assists with reproductive healthcare and hopes to continue abortion services to those who need it.

This is a developing story.
