Kaiser CEO,Bernard Tyson, Dies Unexpectedly At Age 60
On Sunday, Kaiser Permanente CEO, Bernard Tyson, died unexpectedly in his sleep at the age of 60. The exact cause of death has not yet been released.
Tyson became CEO of Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest nonprofit health plans in the United States, in 2013. Since then, Tyson has been able to raise the annual operating revenue of the company from $53 billion in 2013 to $80 billion in June of this year. Tyson was also the company’s first black CEO and a huge advocate for diversity in the workplace as well as affordable and accessible healthcare for all.
His sudden death has caused the National Union of Healthcare Workers to postpone a five-day strike comprised of 4,000 mental health employees that were scheduled to begin on Monday. The union recognizes that this is a time for mourning and not an appropriate time to continue with the strike. A new date for the strike has not yet been released.
Tyson had been with Kaiser for over 30 years which services more than 12 million people nationwide. He is survived by his wife, Denise Bradley-Tyson, and three sons, Bernard Jr., Alexander, and Charles.
Gregory Adams has been named as the interim chairman and CEO in light of this tragedy. He previously served as the executive vice president for the company.
