Galt Police Officer Harminder Grewal Passes Away After A Deadly Head-On Collision
Galt Police Officer Harminder Grewal passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021. He died due to his injuries from a sudden head-on collision that occurred on Sunday, August 22, 2021. Unfortunately, Officer Grewal and his fellow Officer Kapri Herrera were driving to help out in the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County when the accident took place. The collision occurred at 4:30 A.M. in Sacramento County.
A Dodge pickup truck heading southbound on Highway 99, north of Dillard Road collided through the center medium concrete barrier. It tore into the northbound lanes. Then the truck slammed directly into Officer Grewal’s police vehicle. Indeed, the patrol car was severely damaged in the crash and both police officers had to be extracted from the vehicle. They were both hospitalized. Sadly, however, Officer Grewal succumbed to his injuries days after and passed away. Although badly injured, Officer Herrera is expected to survive. According to her family, she suffers from major facial injuries and will need several surgeries.
Unfortunately, the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead on the scene. He was identified as 25 year old Manteca resident, Manjot Singh Thind. Also, he had two passengers in his truck, who were both 26 year old men. They were hospitalized with moderate injuries. Both of their names have not yet been released. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol stated that it is not known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The crash is still under investigation.

Officer Harminder Grewal was only 27 years old. He was with the police department for two and a half years. He was sworn into service for the city of Galt in March 2019.

Officer Grewal was named Officer of the Year by the department in 2020. Recently, he was chosen to be a motorcycle officer, and he was a member of the honor guard. Also, he received awards from the California MADD organization for his efforts of keeping the community safe from drivers under the influence. On Friday, August 27, a funeral procession was held for Officer Grewal starting from Kaiser in South Sacramento on Highway 99, and ending in Lodi, where he is from.
Officer Grewal is survived by his parents Gurdip and Jaswinder Grewal; his brother and sister-in-law, Jasdeep and Kirandeep Grewal; and his sister, Naudeep Sidhu. Additionally, the CAHP (California Association Highway Patrol) Credit Union has set up a memorial fund called the Officer Harminder Grewal Memorial Fund. Fortunately, this fund will allow the Grewal family to memorialize and honor Officer Grewal.

A Candle Light Vigil to honor Officer Grewal will be held at 6:30pm on Thursday, September 2, 2021 on the North Steps of the California State Capitol, in Sacramento, between 11th Street and L Street.
