A Surprisingly Quiet Visit To Apple Hill

My very first trip to Apple Hill was surprisingly quiet. Maybe it had something to do with the pandemic, or that it was 9/11, or the busy season hadn’t begun. Either way, it was an extremely pleasant experience and as it’s a yearly experience for those of us at EGT, I wanted to share. 

If you are unfamiliar with Apple Hill, do yourself a favor and head up there. Up near Placerville, Apple Hill refers to the many farms and ranches that dedicate themselves to growing apples and other produce. Additionally, you can also purchase pumpkins for Halloween, and Christmas trees. If you are someone who loves trees, this place is heaven. Also, parking is free but may be harder to find once the busy season starts. 

Boa Vista Orchards 

Gorgeous, huge, with a vast selection of fruits, drinks, and baked goods — Boa Vista was one of our first stops at Apple Hill. I went with my husband and two of our friends, and I couldn’t ask for better company. Although I bought some beautiful produce, we sampled some hard ciders. Definitely something I’d recommend anyone visiting Boa Vista Orchards to do. Their wines are also fantastic, and we all left with a bottle or two. I’d recommend the Kandi Apple Wine if you are someone who prefers something sweet. 

High Hill Ranch 

I’d say this place is the main event or gathering place at Apple Hill. While there are vendors at Boa Vista and Abel’s, they don’t compare to the large number of vendors at High Hill Ranch. Despite being a place about apples, lots of artists come to Apple Hill to sell their wares. We found a plethora of different things: a man selling homemade flutes, another selling hunting and paring knives, a henna tattoo booth, 3D posters, unique teas, and gift items. 

The area is gorgeous. Nestled into the wild trees, High Hill Ranch also has a small pond for people to relax and fish in if they wanted. Also, there is a restaurant and bakery that is on-site. So after we spent time wandering through the vendors, and bought an armload of fudge from the Fudge Factory, we plopped ourselves down at the restaurant for lunch. Luckily, our car was close enough to store our wares before tucking into our food. Afterward, we left to go to our next destination. 

Rainbow Orchards 

I had been recommended this place due to its popular Apple Cider Donuts. Honestly, I think we surprised the bakers when we ordered 10 of their donuts to take home for friends and family. Of course, the donuts are made with apple cider, and they smell as such. Even outside of the barn, you can smell the donuts and other baked goods being prepared. The donuts are covered in a coating of sugar, and the donuts are fluffy and decadent with a hint of apple flavor. 

Did I mention they also have a wine tasting? 

Definitely Worth The Trip 

While there wasn’t a crowd at Apple Hill when we went, I’d say that the location is worth it. The area is beautiful, shopping here supports the local community, and kids and adults alike can have fun. I will be returning to Apple Hill again in October to get pumpkins for Halloween. I’m not sure how big the crowds will be then, but I can’t wait to smell and taste the apples.
