District Approves Budget For New Recreation Center
The Cosumnes Community Services District approved funds for Elk Grove’s newest recreation center, clearing the way to break ground this summer. The building, located within Morse Community Park, would open in late 2024.
On March 1, its board of directors greenlit construction for the 54,000-square-foot building in the city’s southern area. When finished, Elk Grove will have its largest indoor facility. It will serve an estimated 104,000 residents within 15 miles of the center.

A center for everyone
The $29 million contract with Costa Mesa based S.J. Amoroso Construction targets May 1 for the start of year-long construction. The work aligns with Sacramento County’s effort to create a “high quality, suburban environment” specifically for the East Franklin area.
“We are excited to move forward with construction and deliver on our promise to build this recreation center dedicated to supporting the health and well being of our community,” said Joshua Green, CCSD General Manager, in a written statement.
Known as the CORE Recreation Center Project, the new two-story center at 5540 Bellaterra Drive is a fitness fanatics dream. To that end, CORE will feature two gymnasiums, rooms for aerobics and other fitness activities, and an indoor jogging track. There will also be multi-purpose rooms for classes, public gatherings and an outdoor event lawn.
It’s too soon to determine the specific programs the public can expect. But it’s a good bet that everyone will find something. The center will also have the space to host regional tournaments for sports like indoor soccer or pickle ball. Most importantly, this would help to keep local residents closer to home.
There’s also a potential economic benefit. During construction, subcontractors from Elk Grove or Sacramento will surely vie for work on the project. And the CCSD is looking to expand its current staff levels to help provide the services in that facility.
CCSD leaders said the recreational center will make a great addition to the community. East Franklin already has 16 parks totaling 107 acres. It has the second-most parks and park acres in the district’s park system.
“Elk Grove is well known for its parks and being family friendly. This really aligns with everything the city and the district want to support here,” said Chehrezad.
