Elk Grove Officers Injured In Shooting Responding To Call On Easter Morning
On the morning of April 20, Elk Grove Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious person near Tegan Road, west of Franklin Boulevard.
The caller described the suspicious person as a male subject, trying to break into a travel trailer hooked to a truck. The subject went on to pull on the handles of the trailer. The caller saw the subject move a firearm from his pants pocket to the pocket of his sweatshirt.
When an officer arrived on the scene, the officer made contact with a male and female, standing by the travel trailer. The officer directed the subjects to sit, and they complied. As a second officer arrived, the male subject ran southbound through a shopping center parking lot on Laguna Boulevard and Franklin Boulevard. One officer ran after the suspect and the other pursued in his vehicle. Both officers ended up on either side of the suspect, facing each other. When the suspect moved towards an officer with his hands near his midsection, officers fired at the suspect, hitting the suspect.
The suspect was in possession of a firearm.
The two officers sustained non-life threatening injuries to the legs in the exchange.
Officers on the scene provided medical aid to the suspect, and the suspect and two officers initially on the scene were transported to a local hospital.
Through the investigation, it was discovered that the caller and the suspect were acquaintances. The travel trailer was registered to another individual, but primarily used by the suspect. The female, who was first contacted with the suspect, was detained and later released.
The suspect was tentatively identified as a 41 year old male from Sacramento. Upon confirmation of his identity, the suspect’s name and photo will be released to the public.
After the suspect’s release from the hospital, the suspect will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for numerous charges, including, but not limited to; felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm and resisting/obstructing arrest.
The two officers involved in the shooting include a 14 year veteran of law enforcement with the Elk Grove Police Department since 2006 and a 10 year veteran of law enforcement with the Elk Grove Police Department since 2018. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with Elk Grove Police Department policy.
