Elk Grove Police Arrests Cellphone Thief, Looking For Driver
On October 17, shortly after school was let out, a juvenile was attacked. The purpose of the attack was to steal the victim’s phone. Elk Grove Police identified the assailant as 19-year-old Darius Kelly of Elk Grove. He has been arrested for robbery and attempted kidnapping.
The juvenile was walking when the assailant approached and grabbed the victim. The assailant held the victim and the victim started screaming. The assailant let go of the victim and went after the cellphone in the victim’s hand. After a struggle, the assailant took the phone and ran off in a waiting vehicle, which then sped off.
The crime occurred near the 6600 block of Laguna Drive, and the assailant fled north towards Laguna Boulevard.
Background
A public service announcement about the crime was released from the Elk Grove Police Department shortly after the event took place. Detectives located Kelly at 4:30 PM near Laguna and Franklin Boulevard.
While Kelly’s motive was to steal the phone, he was also charged with attempted kidnapping. Under Penal Code 664/207, kidnapping is defined as moving a victim a substantial distance through force or fear.
Ongoing Investigation
