Elk Grove Man Arrested For Starting Fire In Bedroom

Elk Grove – Tuesday afternoon around 3:10 PM, police and Consumnes Firefighters responded to a bedroom fire in the 8700 block of Valley Oak Lane. Shortly after arriving on scene, police began searching the neighborhood for a subject they believed was responsible for the fire. The search extended west of Elk Grove Florin Road. During the time of the search, Markofer Elementary was placed on lock down as a precautionary measure.

The subject was later identified as 37 year old Shawn Viramontes.

Police said Viramontes got into an argument with his roommates and reportedly made threats towards them. He then went to his bedroom and intentionally started a fire. After setting fire to his room, Viramontes left the residence on foot. The other residents spotted the smoke coming from Viramontes’ room and safely vacated the property. Firefighters were able to contain the fire and its damage to the place of its origination.

Later around 3:25 PM, police located and detained Viramontes. Markofer Elementary was taken off lock down.

Viramontes was arrested for attempted homicide, arson, and criminal threats.
