Best of Elk Grove Ends Future Competitions Due To Threat of Lawsuit
Best of Elk Grove Ends
Business owners in Elk Grove expressed shock on Tuesday to find out that Best of Elk Grove, run by a local non-profit, is ending the competition.
Each year, businesses in Elk Grove compete in specific categories to find out who will be named the Best of Elk Grove winner. The results of the Best of Elk Grove competition were posted last week. Especially relevant is the fact that winners of Best of Elk Grove do not receive any prizes. They simply enjoy recognition in our Elk Grove community.
A local business was upset at the outcome of the competition and hired a lawyer and threatened to sue. Therefore, with limited funds as a non-profit, the organization had no choice but to shut down the competition. Best of Elk Grove posted a letter on social media. The letter explains their decision to end the competition. Consequently, some business owners around Elk Grove are angry and frustrated. As a result of this anger and frustration, it is apparent that business owners want to know exactly who decided to hire a lawyer and threaten to sue.
Personally, I (Jax of Jax Chronicles) think it’s a shame that the competition had to end this way for the rest of us business owners who have worked very hard to get where we are at. No matter what the personal issue or vendetta is of the business owner who threatened to sue, there are innocent business owners who are affected by this, including myself. I really hope everyone can work it out. We’re all adults here.
What The Attorney of the Business Owner Has To Say
**EDIT**
Regarding the Best of Elk Grove shutdown. We heard from the attorney who represents the company claiming discrepancies with the Best of Elk Grove competition. Although the client was not disclosed, they make a few interesting points:
1. The organizer of the event controls the voting and has entered and won in every category every single year.
2. That organizer has business clients whom also generally win in their categories against others who are not clients.
3. They provide screenshots containing proof of vote tabulation discrepencies.
Hence, this is what the other side has to say. Because it is not our job to do so, we are not assessing the validity of their claims. Whether or not any of this should have led to the contest being shut down is not for us to decide. However, our commitment as a news site is to present both sides of the issue.
We also feel badly for all the businesses who poured time and resources into winning the competition. They don’t deserve to get dragged into any personal vendetta or profitable enterprise. There are many innocent business owners who are affected by this and everyone should be sensitive to that fact.
