Dr. Jennifer Overbey Named Physician Of The Year For Methodist Hospital
Physician of the Year
Methodist Hospital recently announced that Dr. Jennifer Overbey, the Chairperson of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been awarded Physician of the Year of Methodist Hospital. In the history of Methodist Hospital, Dr. Overbey is the first woman and African American to receive this award. Congratulations Dr. Overbey!
Education & Awards
Dr. Overbey holds a Bachelor’s from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Also, she earned her M.D. at Wayne State University in Detroit. Finally, she completed her residency at St. John’s hospital and Medical Center, which is also in Detroit.
Dr. Overbey’s education speaks for itself. Additionally, she has a long list of awards and honors complements. Dr. Overbey brings with her numerous awards and honors that illustrate why she was chosen as the new head of the OB/GYN department. Those awards include but are not limited to:
- The David S. Diamond Memorial Award. This is awarded to the 4th year medical student who has distinguished herself above all others in obstetrics/gynecology (2004).
- Golden Apple Teaching Award. Awarded to residents who received superior evaluations from their medical students for teaching during their clerkship rotations (2005-2008).
Most recently, Dr. Overbey was elected Chairperson of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Methodist Hospital of Sacramento in January 2020 and still currently serves in that role. She also earned the position of Assistant Professor at California Northstate University since September of 2021.

Her Career
These are just some of the impressive awards/honors and appointments that Dr. Overbey has earned and achieved in her career. She brings a long background of medical experience to her new role at Mercy as well. She began her career in 1993 as a Student Research Assistant at the University of Michigan, Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Then she served as Clinical Trial Coordinator for The Nutrition and Breast Health Study at Wayne State University/Karmanos Cancer Institute. She served there from 1998 to 2001. Finally, she came to Mercy Medical Center in 2008 as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist and now as the head of that department.
Her Dedication
Dr. Overbey has a clear love for service to people through medicine. However, that is not the only way she serves her community. Indeed, Dr. Overbey also has an amazing record of volunteering in her community. The record of volunteer service that Dr. Overbey has amassed includes mentoring at-risk girls in mentorship programs from 2000 to 2004. Also, she has provided for Detriot’s underserved/indigent population with Cass Clinics from 2001-2004. She is also a published writer, with several papers published on a wide range of medical topics.

With so many outstanding physicians on staff, it never once crossed my mind that I would receive this award. I will continue to help the OB/Gyn department at Methodist shine for years to come.
