3 Most Diverse US Cities Are In California

U.S. News and World Report have conducted a survey that has found Stockton, California to be the most racially diverse city in the United States trailed closely behind by Oakland, California in second and Sacramento, California in third.

U.S. News calculates the diversity of each city based on U.S. Census results and the American Community Survey. For this survey, 66 United States cities that each have a population of 300,000 or more were selected. The racial and ethnic groups gathered from the survey are as follows: White, Black, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic.

Of the 66 United States cities evaluated in terms of this survey, it was found that approximately 70% of them have grown in racial diversity since 2010. Asian and Hispanic populations, in particular, have increased drastically since 2010. Of the larger cities evaluated for the survey, it was found that the Asian population increased by 20% with the Hispanic population increasing by 12% since 2010.

Although there has been a great increase in racial diversity across major United States cities, the U.S. News report still reflects significant inequality in terms of jobs, income, education, and homeownership across racial and ethnic groups.

Conversely, the least diverse major city in the United States was found to be El Paso, Texas trailed closely behind by Detroit, Michigan, and Lexington, Kentucky.
