Sacramento Native Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird Wins 2 Golden Globe Awards

Lady Bird, a film written and directed by Sacramento native Greta Gerwig, won 2 awards at the Golden Globes on Sunday January 6. The epic film, based in Sacramento and gleaned from Gerwig’s childhood memories of growing up in Sacramento, won Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Greta Gerwig grew up in Sacramento and attended St. Francis High School. She attended Barnard College of Columbia University, graduating with a degree win English and Philosophy. In addition to being a writer and director, Gerwig is also an actress. As an actress in Frances Ha, she earned a previous Golden Globe Nomination in 2012. Gerwig also wrote the film Frances Ha. Lady Bird is her solo directorial debut.

Saoirse Ronan is the Golden Globe Award winning actress who plays the main character in Lady Bird. Born in the United States but raised in Ireland, Ronan also has had 2 Academy Award nominations and 3  British Academy Film award nominations.

In Lady Bird, you can see notable Sacramento landmarks such as the Tower Bridge, Crest Theatre, Midtown Sacramento, and the Fab 40s neighborhood. The film is described as “nostalgic” and “heartwarming” to Sacramento natives. The majority of Sacramento residents who have seen the film give it a thumbs up..

Critics and newspapers from all over the world, including New York Times, have given Lady Bird favorable reviews.

Lady Bird tells the story of a senior high school student at a Catholic high school in Sacramento. Since Gerwig attended St. Francis High School in Sacramento, the film is based on many of her memories of her growing up in her hometown of Sacramento.  It is a funny, coming of age film, that all Sacramento natives should love.

It is refreshing to see a young filmmaker from Sacramento succeed. Greta Gerwig intends to write and direct more films in the future.
